In the fall of 1985, a small group of Igbos were brought together by fate to review events of the time. An accident had claimed the life of an Igbo woman in Washington, D.C. Attempts to bring the responsible driver to justice were fought with difficulty, thus bringing home the need for a representative body to foster the spirit of brotherhood and through which to channel our collective concerns.
The word Umunne is Igbo for brothers and sisters. Appropriately, it serves as a constant reminder to all of us, the spirit in which we strive to attain our higher goals.
